7 celebrities who endorse permaculture

This is a compilation of quotes and actions of people who are widely recognised in the western society. The aim is to move the needle of the society’s knowledge about permaculture towards mainstream. Please share the images if you wish to do so.

What permaculturists are doing is the most important activity that any group is doing on the planet. We don’t know what details of a truly sustainable future are going to be like, but we need options, we need people experimenting in all kinds of ways and permaculturists are one of the critical gangs that are doing that.

2. Daryl Hannah:

Obviously, we are facing a time of great crises; we are in the middle of probably the biggest extinction in recorded history. We are pretty much at peak oil and we have over-population. Permaculture is one of the best tools that I know in terms of understanding our place within that system and still do the things we need to do, like grow food and collect water… It’s a more sane way of living in harmony with our environment.

3. George Monbiot:

I see permaculture as being highly compatible with rewilding, actually: rewilding zones could be seen as the outer zone of permaculture, or permaculture as the inner zone of rewilding

4. Ellen Page:

I had the ability and the privilege to study permaculture at an ecovillage in Oregon and I met amazing, fearless, selfless people who are doing such incredible work that nobody hears about

5. Alicia Silverstone:

I love the principles and possibilities that Permaculture offers for healing our land. For those of you who have never heard of it, Permaculture is an approach to designing human settlements and agricultural systems that mimic the relationships found in natural ecologies

…and an update from Kim Wilde:

6. Charles Eisenstein:

An economy that’s aligned with permaculture would be an economy in which the best business decision is the same as the best ecological decision.

7. HRH Prince Charles:

For instance, what made a lasting impact on me was a visit to the Permaculture Institute in the Amazon. In little more than a decade, this remarkable project has integrated agroforestry, aquaculture, and multiple animal systems within a restored landscape that had been utterly destroyed by deforestation. The whole now forms a Virtuous Circle within which all the necessary animal feed is grown and biofuels for the farm vehicles and machinery are produced. What is so deeply impressive is the practical way in which the Institute demonstrates how genuine sustainability can be achieved by applying the principles it has developed.

Here are examples of direct action by some other celebrities which gives testimony to permaculture in practice:

Richard Branson

Mark Garrett and Cecilia Macaulay have designed an organic produce garden for the Necker Island. Richard has also attended permaculture training provided by Mark.

James Cameron:

“Recently James Cameron’s property hosted the ‘Beyond Organic NZ Tour,’ a workshop-based program which shared with participants some of the intricacies involved in developing a food forest. The huge 20 Hectare (50 acre) food forest Cameron is developing with the help of the community and permaculture designers already has over 5,000 edible fruit trees.”

James “Maynard” Keenan

– voice, text, melody of the band “Tool” had his vineyard designed by Andrew Millison. In Andrew’s words:

“I worked for Maynard James Keenan building his orchard and vineyard for 2.5 years. He didn’t care about Permaculture specifically, but is a very intelligent person who understood a good idea when he heard it. Jerome, Arizona is a very dry area, and many Permaculture concepts about water catchment, storage and conservation made a ton of sense to Maynard. The vineyard is on a SE facing slope, and the orchard a North facing slope. The solar aspect and microclimate development were enhanced by the extreme terracing we built, and that all made perfect sense to Maynard. He’s a guy who can understand patterns.”

David Sugalski “The Polish Ambassador”
